Does your backyard need a makeover?

If your yard is so ugly you’re embarrassed to invite your friends over, or the neighbors are constantly complaining about the eyesore, now’s your chance to win the “Ultimate Backyard Contest“. The prize is a $16,000 makeover. The contest is sponsored by WQ Mag and starts August 1 on wqmag.com. To enter you must live in either Sarasota County or Manatee County. Then all you need to do is send a photo of your bad backyard and write 100 words or less about why you want this makeover.

Then everyone will able to vote for worst yard online. The winner will be announced September 23, and the makeover will take place in October.

What’s amazing to me about this contest is more than a dozen local companies are donating their products and/or services to make this happen, including the family-owned businessThe Backyard Getaway.

“My husband Dave has been wanting to do something like this for a couple of years,” owner Lisa Burns said. “The timing seemed perfect, with the economy the way it is, who wouldn’t want to win this contest!”

And considering I’ve never done an ounce of yard work in my life, I think there’s something pretty cool about a free backyard makeover without having to get your hands dirty!
