Have you ever gone out on a date only to wonder if the person was married? If he had a criminal history? Lied about his occupation? Now, I’ve been known to run a date’s name though the local county sheriff’s website to find out if he’s ever been arrested. And having once or twice come up with something, I think this new iPhone app has some potential.
It’s called Stud or Dud?

For $.99 Stud or Dud offers to “help you decide if you should accept a ride or run and hide!”
The app finds:
- Address Histories
- Possible Relationships
- Professional Licenses
- Criminal Records
- Property Ownership
- Sexual Offenses
The app promises to send the complete report right to your iPhone “so you can find out before you go out.”

Then there’s another similar app by the same company, PeopleFinders, called Are They Really Single?
This one has a “lite” version in the app store for free versus the $.99 download for the full version.
You can even do a search choosing from your phone contacts or the person’s phone number.

Now I’m put the Are They Really Single? lite version to the test.. and I’m a little leery of the accuracy. For example, I myself came up with a possible spouse in St. Petersburg in the report.. now really? And two possible state marriage records. Of course neither was me.
I’m just not sure how reliable these things are. I tried a few other “contacts’, but the lite version only allows you two free marriage search reports, prompting you to upgrade to the full version.
And even then I believe you have to pay more to get full reports. Based on my understanding, despite the $.99 download fee both charge $9.95 per full reports or or offer an annual subscription fee of $24.95.
And that’s a price I wasn’t willing to pay.. at least not without a legitimate possible new date in sight.

Hmmm that’s quite interesting.
While I find this quite interesting it’s clearly something I would never pay money for. Although it could be fun to play with while you are out meeting people just for kicks to run a quick background check on them, hey you never know what you’ll find!
