Some of us my live here, others just visit, but let’s face it most of us can’t afford to go out in South Tampa. While we’re probably not quite poor, at least not technically, we’re definitely ghetto girls looking for a good time while spending less. Now don’t mistake us cheap, we prefer to say we’re looking for something less expensive.
Nestled in South Tampa on Howard Avenue is one of the best steak houses in the country. Presidents and celebrities dine at Bern’s when they’re in town, and Tampians, whose annual salary would make us ghetto girls blush, eat there on a regular basis. But most of us can’t afford it. Or can we?
There’s a little known locals’ secret, and it’s not even on the menu. If you sit at the bar, you can get a steak sandwich for $12, and that includes French fries, onion rings or veggie medley. Plus, there are several decent wines which cost $5-7 glass. So if you skip the valet parking and park down one of the neighborhood streets, the restaurant recently started charging $5 without gratuity, you can have a great meal at Bern’s for $30.
The other trick to a night at Bern’s is to eat somewhere less expensive first, then treat yourself to one of Bern’s decadent desserts— Chocolate Cheese Pie, Bananas Foster or Macadamia Nut Sundae, in a private booth in the upstairs dessert room. You’ll still get to experience the ambiance while only spending less than $15.
