The fact that I’m posting this is probably a good indication I’ve lost my mind. But oh well, here it goes anyway…
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The forum is now open!
What it doesn’t look open? That’s because I’m not talking about the public square of an ancient Roman city, but about what I call the “forum of avoidance and denial”.
What you’ve never heard of this meeting place? Well that’s probably because the above mentioned forum is actually a place where I’ve been hibernating instead of discussing questions of public interest. My bedroom.
Oh, don’t get me wrong there are plenty of discussions inside my head. They go a little something like this:
Me: You have work to do
Me: I know, shut up
Me: Those papers don’t grade themselves
Me: I know, shut up
Me: Lesson plans don’t do themselves either
Me: I know, shut up. I think a nap is in order
Me: OK but if you nap, you have to do your work after you wake up
Me: Sure, sure that’s exactly what I’ll do.
Me: If you say so. But somehow I think you’re just kidding yourself.
Me: Fine, you want me to stay up. I’ll watch something on Netflix instead
Me: That’s not exactly what I had in mind…
Me: Would you leave me alone now? I’m in denial and avoiding things.
Yep, that’s how it goes at the forum! And thanks to my newly discovered love of Californication and Weeds on Netflix and my trusty iPhone, I’m able to depend on other things to help facilitate avoidance and denial even further without having to leave my bedroom.
Do you have a place in your home where you do something like this? Or is it just me?
